Ostomy Output on the Wall!
I posted this on our IG account a few months ago, but thought it was worthy of the first post for 2023.
I assume this is the face I made when my bag exploed the other night. I’m not talking a slow leak. It was like a rocket used my stomach as a launching pad.
As usual, my wife was the first responder. Collateral damage included my insulin pump, carpet, wall, and of course the bed. Before I knew it, she had changed the sheets, cleaned the carpet and prepped a bag change while I hosed off in the shower. I tried to apologize for the mess but she cut me off, not having it.
Somehow she didn’t seem phased by the abstract art on our bed.
The day included a lot of eating. It’s the first time I can recall being hungry and actually eating in years. Since my body is still new at the whole operating without a colon deal, I probably should have set an extra alarm to check my bag. We already get up twice, so I assumed it would be fine.
The rest of the night I thought about how much she does for me. As a wife and caregiver, I couldn’t ask for a more caring or patient person. It also made me think of all the caregivers out in the world and the vital role they play.
From family and friends to my medical team, I have a pretty great circle. And of course I could not end the bag explosion night without quoting Christmas Vacation, “Why is the carpet all wet, Todd?”
Thank you to all caregivers out there!
