Casting for Connections: Cancer Support Community
This summer, we partnered with the Cancer Support Community of Bozeman to host two fly fishing events.
We had the pleasure of fishing the private waters of the Baden-Baden ranch in Bozeman. From folks that have never seen a fly rod to seasoned anglers, it was a great day at the ranch. We provided fly rods, bugs, and assisted anglers to land some monster brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. The enthusiasm from attendees was palpable, and it was a great way to spend time away from the grind of cancer management.
We also hosted an evening of fly tying and instruction. We had the pleasure of introducing the craft to several people, including an eight year old that tied worms, midges, and ended the night with a finely executed caddis.
Fly tying is a great winter activity to help pass time during the shorter Montana winter days, and for me has served as a mental health outlet. The repetitive nature of tying bugs is calming and a lot of fun. As I travel regularly to different hospital centers, I always bring a travel fly tying kit to help pass time and provide a bit of comfort from home.
We still have funding available to offer one float trip this fall for two anglers. Trips are offered free of charge to patients and caregivers impacted by chronic illnesses. For additional information, please email us.
